How it works

Where your skills come from

Each role you add is matched to an occupation in the UK Standard Occupational Classification (SOC 2020, sub-unit group level). The UK Standard Skills Classification (SSC) lists the skills, knowledge and core skills people in that occupation usually have, and how important each one is. This tool combines those lists across your whole career.

These are estimates. The SSC links between occupations and skills are modelled estimates, partly AI-generated. Your profile shows skills you are likely to have. Check each one, hide any that don't fit, and set your own rating where you know better.

How levels are worked out

Relevance to each role. For each skill in each occupation, relevance = the average of the SSC's estimated frequency and importance (0–100%).
Effective years. The tool goes through your career month by month and adds up relevance × hours (full-time = 1). When two roles overlap, a month never counts for more than the highest relevance, so you can't earn two years in one. A skill used in several jobs keeps building across all of them.
Depth. Depth = 1 + 4 × (1 − e^−D/k), where k is set so that the "years to Expert" setting gets you to Expert. The first years count most.
Recency. After a grace period, the part above level 1 halves every half-life. Skills the SSC tags as digital fade faster.
Level = depth × recency, rounded to 1–5. Levels use the SSC's own wording: 1 Minimal, 2 Basic, 3 Medium, 4 High, 5 Expert.

Core skills work differently. The SSC gives each occupation a required level for each of its core skills. You reach a level once you've spent enough recency-weighted time in roles that need that level or higher.

Knowledge areas are graded the same way as skills, using the SSC's knowledge importance for each occupation.
